Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of characters who will separate from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), Thimble (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and fled to a secure base in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as important members in the influential clan could enable the group access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them little choice but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the recent installment’s follow-up content, we discover that the Soldiers table won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
