EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
