The star has donated the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which works to save the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

The star was given the prize on October 16 as his third album his work was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to help thirty-eight small stages across the UK.

The money supported locations that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties caused by water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

Also 1994 winners the group donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked singer Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had saved two local spots in that region, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and the other in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
