Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
